this week with a more spirited president obama trading jabs with republican rival mitt romney on everything from immigration to taxes. national polls show the race still very much a toss-up, and swing state surveys continue to tighten. we welcome in our panel this week. so kim, i talked to a lot of democrats this week who were elated by the president's performance. they say that the king is back. he's really rocking now. [laughter] momentum the big mo's with him. what do you think about that? are they right? >> well, i mean, the president certainly made his base thrilled with his performance at the debate. that was one of the things he needed to do. look, there's too many questions coming at the president's campaign. he needed to settle and calm those fears. yes, he succeeded at. what he did not arguably do at the debate is in any stem the damage that mitt romney inflicted in the first debate, which was to expose that he's not really running publicly with a second term agenda. and that's what independents and a lot of undecided voters are looking at that. in that he sounded like someone who

! but one thing for sure on that stage last night we only saw one commander in chief. yes, obama wins round three of the presidential debate hands down. we'll get into it every which way here for the next three hours but first today's latest, the current news update from lisa ferguson out in los angeles. hi lisa, good morning. >> hey bill. good morning everyone. if you are asking yourself who won last night's presidential debate you probably weren't watching. president obama came out with a strong and aggressive performance against mitt romney on foreign policy. the first instant poll from cbs shows 53% of undecided voters say president obama came out on top, just 23% say toward romney. but there are some differing opinions out there. according to cnn poll, only 40% of viewers say romney won but 60% say he is ready to handle the responsibilities of president. and 32% of independents say they are now more likely to vote for romney after last night's performance. that is surprising since by most accounts president obam

seem kind of hard-pressed to come up with any real criticism of the obama administration's foreign policy positions. as our own john fuglesang here at current tv, he put it so wonderfully, it was as if romney were introducing the me, too doctrine. so how much does mitt romney support the president's foreign policy? well, let me count the ways. he agrees with the president's proposed 2014 withdrawal from afghanistan. he agrees with putting sanctions on iran. and he agrees with the president's handling of the iraq war. and the drone strikes and targeted killings in pakistan. but one place the candidates do diverge is on spending. here's what that looks like when you put the two plans side by side. president obama would honor the department of defense's request that defense spending be 3.3% of gross domestic product and keep the funding stable over the next decade. mitt romney on the other hand, he would bump that up to 4%. so that's where you get that huge $2 trillion increase over ten years which by the way

days until election day. here's where this race stands. a new nbc poll shows president obama and mitt romney tied at 47% among likely voters. this is a dead heat. but the president is leading in the likely electoral count. the new yoknew yor york times b shows that the president has 288 compared to 2508 for mitt romney. 270 are needed to win the election. the times blog gives president obama a 67% chance of winning the election versus a 32% chance for mitt romney. so far, 4.4 million americans have already cast their votes, absentee ballots, or early votings have been used. later in this show, we'll have much more on what those early voting numbers mean and on the republican efforts to keep democratic votes down. but we start with tonight's lead. mitt romney's playing politics with foreign policy. tonight's debate topic is foreign policy, an area where the president has proven himself time and time again. it's a different story for governor romney. he stumbled on international affairs throughout this campaign. and he has shown an unsteady hand on the tragedy in libya. unsteady and hig

are in the homestretch of the race for the white house. president obama and mitt romney met to debate foreign policy at lynn university in boca raton florida, last night and when it was all over, romney's running mate, congressman paul ryan, picked a winner close to his heart. >> i think governor romney won this debate and you know why i think he won it? because americans, for a third time now got to see a man ready to become a great president. >> eliot: the polls suggest voters saw the debate a little differently. undecided voters in a cbs news poll favored president obama's performance by 30 points over mitt romney. registered voters in a cnn poll gave the president an 8-point lead over his rival and voters in 11 swing states gave mr. obama an 11-point debate margin over romney in a public policy poll. those swing state voters also favored the president by 6 points when they were asked who they planned to support. the big sur prices last night for much of the debate, mitt romney seemed more concerned with obscuring the differences

. it will be interesting to see if either moderator or candidate brings up those loss. the obama campaign out with a new television ad juxtaposing his and mitt romney's stance on the wars in iraq and afghanistan. here is a bit of that spot linking the u.s. foreign policy with domestic progress. >> obama's brought 30,000 soldiers back from afghanistan and has a responsible plan to end the war. romney calls it bobble's biggest mistake. it is time to stop fighting over there and start rebuilding here. >> we're also bound to hear more on the attacks in libya and our consulate in benghazi and how the administration has been handling communications in the aftermath. romney also is going to bring up iran. i'm sure both will bring up iran. mitt romney refused to say whether or not he would have one on one talks with the country. he says he wants to tighten sanctions but he hasn't specified how he would do that. the reports are the sanctions already in place are working. so far iran's currency has been stifle and the value of its money

the command center chief test, and has president obama already passed it, and hence this debate is really about whether romney can pass it or not, is it as simple as that, or is it more detailed? >> al gore: i think it is a factor, but i think it's more detailed in an era where the united states has been through two long wars. i think that governor romney, in addition to being required to pass that test, i agree with you on that, he also has some opportunities to try to take particular incidents like the bengahzi matter, and use it as a symbol to lay the basis for a broader indictment. i don't think it's justified and i don't think you'll be able to do it, but he certainly is going to try. now his lack of experience in these issues has already shown up. you know he declared that russia was our number one foreign policy opponent causing former secretary of state and chairman of the joint chief colin powell to say come on, mitt think. i thought that was very hurtful to governor romney. >> jennifer: i put bets on the table that colin powell endorses some time tonight or in the next few days.
